Completely agree, I have had several people move from various chat apps and texting to Signal largely because of the iMessage like features. Ultimately, I am now able to have more secure discussions with largely non-technical users which is good for everyone.

I would love a citation on this.

Anecdotally, I have lived in both the United States and United Kingdom. My tax rate was similar and in the UK I largely paid less for rent, healthcare and public transportation while paying more for staples like food. All in all costs were largely equaled out, although in the UK I enjoyed more vacation and worker protections I did not have as a US employee.

I don't know about the UK, but my net annual savings in the US is about equal to what my gross income would be in France or Germany. If I worked in the tech industry I'm sure the difference would be even greater.

Also, healthcare is a problem in the US for people who don't get it from their employer. For those who do, it's often relatively inexpensive. I pay ~$100/month for really good coverage.

It's the lower to lower-middle class that has it difficult in the US.

Statistically speaking you are an incredible outlier. Good for you, of course, but you shouldn’t generalize your experience to the entire population.

Only if it isn't a Sinclair Media station...

Exactly, I was unsure what to make of this story. While being demanding of exceptional performance may pay off in the short term, I've seen many environments where this creates a moral problem in the longer term - typically leading to staff turnover.

I completely agree with this comment, while I like to assume people are being helpful this whole thread is coming off a bit too nitpicky on the interface.

The story and pictures/video were simply amazing, and the way it displayed was excellent. Having just listened to Dan Carlin's Wrath of the Khans (http://www.dancarlin.com/product/hardcore-history-43-wrath-o...), the presentation really helped with some of the visuals and cultural references on the podcast.

When I worked their seasonally a few years ago we thankfully had a sane manager that knew people didn't want to give away their personal information (especially for small purchases) so we had a 'Shack, Radio' name with the address of the store (As the POS required an address to be inputted). Unfortunately, we still needed to ask for the larger purchases as they would go ballistic if all purchases were tied to that address.

And did you ever refuse to sell to someone who refused their data?

I used to roll over, decades ago, but at least in the last decade I just calmly and firmly say "no" while looking them right in the eye. They just say OK and take my money, I don't know what they do behind the register.

trickle down works!

I would imagine its to fuzz up Facebook's social mapping.

US -> Scotland here; will probably return to US for the pizza.

There's this place not too far from Scotland, easily reachable via a cheap flight with EasyJet. It's called Italy. They make amazing pizzas. And gelato. Mmmmm, gelato pizza...

Do a pizza startup? :)

What's wrong with a little bit of fun on one day a year?

It's not really that fun, though. The 'jokes' are so over the top that it's annoying.

How so? Whats wrong with a small change for the day, or some goofy humor?

Sometimes its an acknowledgement of your audience. Sometimes it drums up some good publicity for a company.
