Tracking solar time would mean it's equivalently light out at 5AM and at 7PM. Nearly noone is awake at 5AM. Nearly everyone is awake at 7PM. You can wave your arms around and say "well then why don't people wake up earlier", but they have jobs and stuff. The "scientific evidence" for standard time is flimsy.

People did wake up at way earlier. Working hours have shifted past by a few hours during the last century, so it seems like people actually prefer that.

I'd rather have it switch than do permanent standard time. It's not good to end your workday in total darkness if you can avoid it. It's nice to wake up in early darkness and see the sun rise. Best would be permanent daylight time.

It’s always this argument with people, all totaled up against people’s overall health - as pretty much every sleep scientist agrees, kids actually being able to get to school because it’s not too cold (not to mention safety as far as light goes), and making night owl’s lives hell.

But yeah, you definitely need to drive home in the light instead of the dark for those two months out of the year or whatever. Definitely worth it.

I'm a night owl and daylight time does not make my life hell, kids don't walk to school in the US anymore, and yes, experiencing the daylight for 2 more months of the year is worth it.

Ok, well, I'm a night owl and it makes things significantly harder for me, and pretty much every single teenager in the US to boot. Kids don't walk to school, but they do wait for school buses. Late starts are already common in northern states due to cold, and some kids do in fact still walk to school in the morning, and that's way more dangerous in the dark.

I dug into this for a minute since I am sort of qualified. Only read through code, I have not tried to run it.

The mass of it is incredible, but it's a bit hard to tell what is an AI hallucination.

Digging in at random, it appears real, but it doesn't smell right for code of this mass. Most of the code seems to exist as it describes - which is an insane quantity. Everything seems to be what you would get if you asked AI to write it - for example, I looked through tonemapping and it appears to implement a small set of textbook tonemapping algos. In code that is really used, I expect to see something more purpose driven, not sure how to better say it. But an AI when asked to "handle tonemapping" would just pick a few literature methods and implement.

One random pick was "oximedia-gaming" which it said was stable with nvenc support. I wanted to check this out because I've called nvenc from C++ before and it was hard. The nvenc support is a no-op. So that's not quite right.

If (and it's a huge if), this code really works as it says, and it's written mostly by LLMs (it appears to be), then this is a huge testament to the value highly structured environment like Rust provides to the LLM.

I shudder to imagine the token costs...

Eliminate income tax and replace with flat sales tax is a libertarian-conservative policy goal for some time

Anything flatter than a progressive tax means, by definition, that the poor will pay more, and the rich less.

I suppose that sounds pretty good if you're rich.

Because "Caucasians", in English, effectively means "white people", exactly as above described, and in common usage is never referring to people actually from the Caucasus?

No, I hate standard time, because in winter the sun sets at 4 or 5, when it could set at 5 or 6, i.e. daylight when leaving work.

I do not care if the sun is up as I shuffle groggily into the building. I don't think I'm alone.

You are not alone according to polling in BC.

I think fundamentally it comes down to energy for me. I have very little energy in the morning so I am not going to harness the pre-work daylight hours to do something outside like taking my dog to the park, biking, or running. For me I don’t actually start feeling energized until maybe 9-10AM.

After work however, I have much more energy to do things outside with the daylight.

Right, but one problem is that people with kids do care a lot that they're going to school in the dark.

> signals very clearly you don't really give much of a shit about talking to her, and your social status is higher than hers

he said "_without_ coming off like a creep"

Maybe if you do it very very wrong. I suppose you're imagining some swaggering jerk putting her down and acting self important, that's your mistake.

No, it's very much yours and the way you phrased it. Perhaps you didn't mean it this way, but you sound like some kind of "pickup artist" type giving advice on "negging" women.

Since I didn't mention how to do anything, seems like he was projecting his biases on my words. Pretty sad that "be someone worth talking to" and "don't project neediness" are somehow owned by the manosphere now. No wonder people are marrying chatbots.

> "be someone worth talking to" and "don't project neediness"

Doesn't come off like a creep.

> signals very clearly you don't really give much of a shit about talking to her, and your social status is higher than hers

Comes off like a creep.

One that cannot tell the difference probably comes off like a creep.

I like to think that it is drummed up to increase division between left leaning people but of course I don't really know.

Best of luck to you.

Hah, leftists don't need help drumming up infighting, it's our national pasttime.

Some people do though. Then the "Your coffee/food/electronics/exercise/(etc but increasingly tenuous) are a drug" people start to jump in...

my understanding is that they can hold you for a couple days without charges for your insubordination but as a citizen they have to let you back into the country or officially arrest you, try to get an actual warrant, etc.

they can just break the law

There is no law when entering the country. They can do everything they want, or making up anything they'll imagine.
