I think iMessage on Mac will be somewhat crippled relative to on an iPhone, ss there is no fallback to SMS. That makes sense, and also is what Apple says on its site:

    "it lets you send unlimited messages to anyone on
     a Mac or an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running
     iOS 5."
