Moving from macOS to Linux: What's Better? (ucsd.edu)

We are all different. But I find working with Linux is a breeze. Yes, sometimes you have to futz with it. (‘Linux is free if your time is worthless')

But I find that, on average, I spend more time futzing with MacOS or Windows than I do with Linux. Therefore, not only do you pay Apple or MSFT handsomely for using MacOS or Windows, but you are throwing in your 'worthless' time as well.

Futzing with MacOS is particularly annoying because of Apple's habitual obfuscation policies where the use of BSD under the bonnet should make all tweaking stuff easier.

It's getting harder to find mac app store apps without subscriptions. You have to open up the "Yes" in "In-App Purchases" to find out if you're asked for a one-time beer or coffee, or a $30/year (or worse) subscription.

When things get more locked-down on the Apple side, I'll make the jump (back).

So far, avoiding the 6GB update to Sonoma, and only when it's out of unofficial public beta (more than 0.2 points away from 14.0)

I tried a tiling manager, but I was disoriented, so I turned it off. I try to never pay more than $3 for an app, harder to do nowadays. I have apps going back to 2010, and TrunkNotes (a wiki, written for iOS) seems to work on Ventura.

I love what he says about window tiling:

> One of these days, Apple will finally and bravely invent active Window Tiling, and it will be revolutionary for users everywhere ...

And the ending summary:

> ... Or, perhaps you’re like me, and you do care about some of the deficiencies, but you care more about privacy, freedom, repair and upgrade, a strong community-based computing movement, and the right to own and control your own computer.

> If any of that sounds like you, then maybe it’s time to make like a tree sitting above Isaac Newton, and finally drop that Apple.
