Isn't it a crime to pay people to register to vote?

Yes. In any election in which a federal candidate is on the ballot, federal law prohibits any individual or entity, including 501(c)(3) nonprofits, social welfare organizations, and unions, from knowingly and willfully paying, offering to pay, or accepting payment either for registering to vote or voting

52 U.S.C. § 10307

I couldn't find it in the section you gave, but I did find it in 18 USC 597

https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?hl=false&edition=prelim&...

52 U.S. Code § 10307 (C)

> pays or offers to pay or accepts payment either for registration to vote or for voting shall be fined not more than $10,000 or imprisoned not more than five years, or both

Same as telling people to vote 10 times like Elmo mother did https://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2024/10/06/x-brands-maye-mus...

I see the apple didn't fall far from the tree, bloody hell.

This is paying people who are already registered to vote?

> This is paying people who are already registered to vote?

Others already pointed out that both are a crime.

But if they went and registered, they could get the money.

I'm not paying you to do X, but if you do X and then Y, I'll pay you.

Laws are not mechanical. "Technicalities" are rarer than you might think.

What is the crime?

It's not hard to figure out who people would vote for (on average). Pick a town that leans in your direction but has low voter turnout and I'm convinced you can affect the outcome.

And you've just described pretty much every voter registration and voter turnout effort ever.

They'll also pay you $30/hour to go out and get people to register and turn out to vote.

This is an email and contact harvesting scheme.

Are those really worth $47?

Especially someone who is willing to sign the petition doesn't seem like they really need to be advertised to.

It's ok, he won't pay. Elon has a history of not paying his creditors.

It's probably not for advertising.

100% Elon will claim dems submitted tons of fake data

Where is the actual petition? I'm not going to sign it but I'd like to read it at least!

it's not a real petition. it just says "The First and Second Amendments guarantee freedom of speech and the right to bear arms. By signing below, I am pledging my support for the First and Second Amendments."

How did they come up with $47? It's an odd amount.

Trump would be the 47th president.

I'm particularly invested in his defeat.
