A couple of anecdata here:

- I wrote a (nearly) pure functional Katamari-type 3D game (OpenGL + ODE for physics). You can find the source here[1]. I didn't find the functional style to be a problem at all.

- At about the same time I was involved in a large closed-source project that simulated the criminal justice system of a well-known European country. Criminals, police, judges, prisons, etc. and their interactions with each other. It was written in OCaml in a pure functional style. Again, no problems writing it functionally.

I'm assuming you can't really give more information but is there some research paper or at least the name of said European simulation. It sounds pretty interesting and somewhat relevant to what I'm currently doing :)


I'm afraid I really can't say any more about that. I got an email from the contractor asking me to remove a posting last time I mentioned more details about that project (FWIW I have no idea why they were so secretive/sensitive about it).
