I think the desired effect could be achieved with $6/gallon.

People would have to switch to smaller, more fuel efficient cars as they did in Europe, where this is roughly the average price.

The desired effect is net-zero carbon emissions. Which means all fossil fuel vehicle emissions must be offset. That'd make it cheaper to switch away from fossil fuel for the vast majority, but there will always be use cases for fossil fuels.


Don't we actually need net-negative?


Yes. And there’s no way to offset carbon emissions at any significant scale that I’m aware of.
